[CFP] Out of the Wings Forum 2024: Worldmaking on Stage: Theatre Translation Practice and Future-Making

Tuesday 16 July 2024, King’s College London

As part of the 2024 Out of the Wings Festival, Out of the Wings is once again coming together with Language Acts and Worldmaking and the Goldsmiths Translation Research Group to offer a one-day discussion forum aimed at theatre translation practitioners and researchers.

Following the success of its previous three editions addressing the idea of ‘Worldmaking on Stage’, in 2024 we invite participants to explore how the practices and processes of theatre translation engage us in thinking about the future from different perspectives, languages and performance traditions.

Taking place on Tuesday 16 July, and timed to coincide with the opening day of the Out of the Wings Festival (16 – 21 July 2024), the Forum will set the scene for a week of play readings from Latin America, Portugal, and Spain, presented in English translation every evening at Omnibus Theatre.

At the Forum, we will bring together practitioners and researchers — actors, directors, producers, literary managers, commissioning editors, dramaturges, writers, translators, research students, theatre translation trainers, theatre translation lecturers, and academics — to engage with ideas on staging, teaching, and researching translated theatre.

The Forum will take place in person at King’s College London. We may be able to accommodate some online participation. Please state clearly in your proposal if you wish to present online.

Together, we will explore the role theatre translation plays in helping us to imagine our future by taking us out of our individual and collective locations. If translation is a constant intervention in the target language, with the potential for disruption or transformation, can theatre translation help us, for example, to actively propose change and to challenge discourses through our knowledge of their impact in other places and times?

We invite short proposals for ten-minute (maximum) provocations. This length of time is to ensure conversation and to allow us to hear as many voices as possible. Please take this into account as you prepare your proposal. We invite you to engage with, among others, the following questions and topic areas or to propose other questions in your submission.

  • How does theatre in translation play a role in shaping how we imagine the future of our societies?
  • What are the transnational connections created through theatre that enable world-making and future-making?
  • Can theatre in translation help us to imagine a future without a nostalgia for the past?
  • Can theatre translation practice shed light on the development of national discourses and action from other locations and experiences?

The deadline for proposals is Monday 20 May at 17:00, London local time. Please fill in this form to submit a proposal.

The Forum will take place in person at King’s College London. We may be able to accommodate some online participation. Please state clearly in your proposal if you wish to present online.
