The Department of Modern Languages is looking to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Mandarin Chinese, Translation & Interpreting.  

The successful candidate will have: the expertise to teach in the area specified in the job particulars: experience of teaching Mandarin Chinese, Translation and Interpreting in a University department or equivalent; fluent written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and English; and expertise in development and delivery of language, translation and interpreting teaching. Experience with delivering teaching in an Interpreting suite is essential. Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in creative adaptation of teaching materials and content to particular student needs and module aims.  

The post-holder will be expected to develop, teach and assess courses in Mandarin Chinese language, Translation and Interpreting at all Undergradute and Postgraduate levels, across students within and potentially external to the University. These courses will be delivered primarily in-person using a range of media and resources, including within an Interpreting suite.  The post-holder will also be expected to undertake administrative work in the Department. Late hours and weekend working may be required.  

Main Duties

Teach courses at a range of levels within specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates and postgraduates, through allocated lectures, seminars, language classes and supervision, in-person and digitally, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met.
Contribute to the design of modules, in general, and teaching materials, in particular, with other colleagues.

Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and supporting digital materials in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
Person Specification

  • Higher degree relevant to research or teaching area or equivalent qualifications
  • Experience teaching through the medium of the target language
  • Ability to teach Mandarin Chinese language, Translation and Interpreting, at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
  • Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively and evidence a flexible, positive and creative approach to work
