[CFP] Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal
Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal (ISSN 2053-9665) welcomes submissions throughout the year from scholars around the world. We aim to provide our readership with articles from across the disciplinary spectrum, and hence will consider material drawn from all fields. As Exchanges has a core mission to support the development and dissemination of research by early career and post-graduate researchers, we are especially pleased to receive manuscripts from emerging scholars or first-time authors. However, contributions from established and senior scholars are also welcomed.
This open submission call is in addition to any of our themed and special issue calls.
The journal is a diamond open-access journal, and therefore does not levy any author publication charges (fees). Articles are published under a CC-BY licence with authors retaining copyright over their work.
Exchanges has an expressly multidisciplinary, global and largely academic readership with particular interests in work which encompasses or straddles disciplinary boundaries. Overtly interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary articles are especially welcomed, as are manuscripts providing an introduction or overview of key fields and research discourse.
Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to consider accommodate and tailor their manuscripts to addresses this broad audience. For interviews and critical reflections, authors are especially advised to highlight the importance of any disciplinary discourse or interviewees’ scholarly contributions to the global academy, society or public sphere.
Manuscript Format Requirements
Original, previously unpublished, manuscript contributions will be considered from researchers or practitioners based within any discipline, working anywhere globally, which fulfil our standard article format requirements. Principally these are:
- Research articles: 4,000-6,000 words, peer reviewed
- Review articles: 3,000-5,000 words, peer reviewed
- Conversations: 1,500-4,000 words, editorially reviewed

For full details on these formats please see our author guidance. Authors considering submitting a critical reflection or conversation article, are strongly encouraged to discuss the proposed content with the Editor-in-Chief or any Editorial Board member, prior to submission. Authors wishing to submit materials outside of these formats, should consult with the Editor-in-Chief directly.
Since launch our acceptance rate has averaged as 55% of submitted articles. Of the 45% of manuscripts which were declined from consideration, 14% failed to meet our base requirements (desk decline) and 32% were declined following peer-review (post-review decline).
There is no submission deadline and manuscripts are accepted for consideration throughout the year. Manuscripts which pass our review requirements will be published in the next available regular journal issue. Currently, regular issues of Exchanges are typically published in late April and October.
The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board members invite approaches from potential authors to discuss any proposed articles ahead of submission, and will be able to advise on its suitability for the journal.
