[Event] The New Normal in Audiovisual Translation: Tradition, Technology, Innovation
10 December 2021
The world of AVT is rapidly and relentlessly fast-forwarding to what, just a decade ago, we would have considered science fiction. Undoubtedly, translation and technology have always walked hand in hand, but as artificial intelligence enters the picture more and more, this begs the question of what the role of translators will be in this ever-changing scenario and how the profession, the market and viewers will adapt to and exploit these changes.
In a market in which the future of subtitling and dubbing seems to be heading in the direction of cloud-based workflow solutions and deep-fake technology is being experimentally applied to dubbing, the AVT industry seems to be caught between contrasting forces constantly pushing both professionals and commissioners between the need for cost-effective solutions, improved standards in quality, and the viewers’ increasingly higher expectations. In this scenario, the research and practice of AVT are also bound to undergo considerable and necessary shifts in the next few years and to start interrogating the intersections between more traditional approaches and the innovations brought about by newer technologies.
This symposium – organized by the research group in Audiovisual Translation at the University of Bologna’s Department of Interpretation and Translation (DIT) – seeks to contextualize these shifts both by shining a light on original research by established, international scholars and by contributing to ongoing debates in the audiovisual translation industry.
