Following the International Conference Media for All 9: Sketching Tomorrow’s Mediascape, we would like to invite all conference participants and attendees as well as any other AVT/Media Accessibility scholars doing research within the overall theme of the conference to submit an abstract for the eponymous special issue to be guest-edited by Mary Carroll and Aline Remael for the online open access Journal of Audiovisual Translation (www.jatjournal.org).

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, it was clear that tomorrow’s mediascape would be transformed into one conducted largely online with collaboration, partnership, project development, interdisciplinarity and technology as increasingly focal features. New post-pandemic workflows and technologies will continue to impact and provide abundant opportunities for practitioners, scholars and users to interact and develop business models adapted to working conditions that will remain changeable and unpredictable for some time to come. Professional experiences acquired during the Covid pandemic will have pointed to some of the limitations of online resourcing, global business models, communication, translation and accessibility. Virtual access to information and culture along with its social, financial and academic impact will have left its mark. We would like to invite all prospective authors to consider their research on the mediascape of tomorrow, preferably but not exclusively, with reference to this unstable and unpredictable balance.

More concretely, we invite contributions from stakeholders, researchers, developers, analysts and practitioners doing research in the broad domain of audiovisual translation and media accessibility to submit abstracts dealing with the following key AVT themes:

  • New technologies and new practices
  • Cross-stakeholder collaboration
  • Workflows
  • Consulting stakeholders
  • Awareness and education
  • Professional profiles and practices
  • Research and testing
  • Resources
  • Networks
  • Standards and best practices

Examples of topics in audiovisual translation and media accessibility to be addressed within that framework include but are not limited to:

  • Production tools
  • Content creation and delivery
  • Technologies in practice and research
  • Consumer behaviour
  • Key performances indicators (KPIs) and evaluation metrics
  • Devices, environments and platforms
  • Training
  • Ethics
  • Research methodologies (e.g. cognitive and perception studies)
  • Standards and policies

Each abstract should contain both research questions/aims, methodology, and results and conclusions. While the length of the abstracts may vary, they should be between 400 and 600 words, supplied with a bibliography and 10 keywords.

Please email your abstract directly to the editors at aline.remael@uantwerpen.be .
