[Event] Subtitling World Cinema Workshop: Four International Screenings and a Round Table

Event Information

Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the British Academy, Being Human is the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. In 2020, the festival theme is ‘New Worlds’. The festival will run 12-22 November. The core festival objectives are:

  • to demonstrate the value of humanities research to society in the UK and globally;
  • to encourage, support and create opportunities for humanities researchers to engage with non-specialist audiences;
  • to embed and join together public engagement activities in the humanities across the higher education (HE) sector;
  • to demonstrate the relevance of the humanities to everyday life.

Being Human festival 2020 is going forward as planned. Find more details in our latest statement here: ‘Coronavirus (COVID-19) update’.

Events: Subtitling World Cinema Workshop: Four International Screenings and a Round Table

Date: Saturday 21 November 2020

Location: Online

Join us to watch an exciting array of four films from across the world, newly subtitled into English by University of Exeter MA Translation Studies students, or recently subtitled professionally. Choose any one or more of the films that you are interested in, but be sure to attend our roundtable discussion with film-makers, academics, translators, film restorers and MA students who subtitled the films. Our films come from three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, span four languages, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian and Spanish, and range from the 1960s to the present day. Our two documentaries and two feature films all share a focus on gender, from an early example of Spanish feminist cinema, to a Moroccan 1980s classic, a Chinese LGBT documentary, and a recent documentary about Italian second-wave feminists:

The details are as follows:

  • Film 1: Life Goes On (language: Spanish with English subtitles, Fernán Gómez, 1963) – Link to recorded introduction and link to streamable subtitled film to be sent prior to the event.
