Call for papers
The 12th International Conference on Third Language Acquisition and Multilingualism will take place at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia, on September 10-12, 2020. For the first time, the conference will be preceded by a doctoral workshop on September 9, 2020.
We welcome original and previously unpublished papers on research in all areas of multilingualism and the acquisition or use of three or more languages. The language of the conference is predominantly English, but contributions in other languages will also be considered.

Types of presentations
We welcome abstracts in four categories: individual papers in parallel sessions, posters, thematic symposia, and doctoral student workshops.
Individual papers will be allotted 30 minutes: 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference with alloted poster session time. Thematic symposia will focus on one specific topic and will bring together key contributions to the topic. They will take place in 2-hour slots (4 papers) parallel to the other sessions.
DOCTORAL STUDENT WORKSHOP
The doctoral student workshop is intended to serve as a platform for discussions of ongoing PhD research, and for obtaining feedback from senior researchers (discussants) and other scholars. Doctoral student papers will be assigned 30 minutes: 15 minutes for the presentation and 15 minutes for the discussion. Doctoral students, whose proposals are accepted, are required to send their abstracts, presentation and specific questions to a discussant before the conference (deadline TBA). The doctoral workshop will take place on September 9, in the afternoon.
Abstract submission
All abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by the scientific committee and evaluated in terms of the quality of content, clarity, contribution to the field and thematic relevance. Notifications of acceptance will be sent before 31 January 2020.
An individual may appear as first author only once on the programme, in addition to a possible role as thematic symposium organiser or co-author of another paper.
Abstracts for individual papers and posters should be sent in English or in the language of presentation, accompanied by an English translation. The abstracts (max 300 words, excluding title and references, in Times New Roman, 12 pt.) should be submitted no later than 19 November 2019 via EasyAbs (http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/iaml3conf2020).
The proposals for the themed symposia should include the following: name and affiliation of the convener(s) and other authors, e-mail address of the first convener/ author, title and goals of the symposium (100-150 words), titles and abstracts (max 300 words) for each of the constituent papers. The proposals should be sent to iaml3conference2020@ffzg.hr (subject line: IAM2020_symposia proposal) no later than 19 November 2019.
Abstracts for the doctoral student workshop (max 300 words, excluding title and references, in Times New Roman, 12 pt.) should be sent to iaml3conference2020@ffzg.hr subject line: IAM2020_doctoral workshop) no later than 19 November 2019.
We invite papers on third language acquisition and multilingualism in relation to:
- acquisition of L3, L4, Ln
- multiple language acquisition in multilingual contexts;
- psycho- and neurolinguistics of multilingualism;
- speech processing in multilinguals;
- affect (attitudes, emotions);
- multilingual families;
- mobility and migration of multilinguals;
- multilingual cultures;
- language policies;
- educational language policies;
- literacy in multiple languages (pluriliteracy);
- multilingualism in educational settings;
- standards, assessment and evaluation;
- education and immersion in multiple languages;
- languages and globalization;
- languages and economics;
- translation, interpreting, and mediation.
