School of Languages and Translation Studies is an active, diverse and international centre for teaching and research on language studies. The areas of strength of the School of Languages and Translation Studies are the following: cognitive linguistics, digital linguistics, research on interaction and variation, postcolonial literary studies, book history, study of Finnish and other Finno-Ugric languages, translation studies, changes in language and writing at cultural turning points, language learning and teaching, research on grammar and vocabulary, philology and history of learning.

Applications are hereby invited for the position of post-doctoral researcher in the School of Languages and Translation Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku. This position will be filled through a fixed-term employment for two years. 

The employment period of the appointed post-doctoral researcher is 1.10.2019–30.9.2021.

This position is situated within one of the following thematic frameworks:
a) Digital interaction
b) Children, young people and learning
c) Cultural memory and social change.

General Information

This Post-doctoral researcher position both supports and strengthens the research that is conducted on the university and school’s areas of focus. This post falls under the authority of the school, and it primarily provides for the needs of its disciplines. The suitability of an applicant’s research to the school’s research profile is significant in the selection process.

The person selected for this post should have a strong history of research contribution, be active within international publications, write joint publications, organize science-related events, and participate in applications for outside research funding. To a lesser degree, the post-doctoral researcher will be required to teach within the field of their special expertise, as well as supervise theses on various academic levels. This post requires an active presence at the school.

Persons applying for this post should be researchers in language and/or translation studies, who have already demonstrated their research ability. An eligible applicant must be a researcher with no more than five years of experience since his or her PhD completion. An applicant who has completed his or her doctoral degree more than five years ago will be considered only for special reasons (maternity, paternity, parental or childcare leave, military service or non-military service, or long-term illness). If you plead one of these special exceptions, please justify your reasons within your application documents. If your reasons are strictly confidential, please contact the Head of the School of Languages and Translation Studies.

The individual selected for this position must possess an applicable doctoral degree, the ability to complete independent research, and teaching skills. In order to succeed in this position, good command of the English language and good social interaction skills are also important. Good command of Finnish is also an asset. The qualification requirements are prescribed in the regulations of Turku University. This position is subject to a six-month trial period.

Salary

This post-doctoral researcher position is a second-level post, according to the university’s salary structure. The task-specific salary component for teaching and research staff, which includes this post-doctoral researcher position, is 2,935.55 euros per month (according to the fifth level of the job demands chart). In addition, a personal work performance component of a minimum of 6% and maximum of 50% of the task-specific salary component will also be paid to this post-doctoral researcher.
