Course Content
This course is aimed at translators (particularly audiovisual translators), linguists and translation students with a special interest in music. No prerequisite in music skills is needed, although musicians with an interest in languages are also welcome. We will first introduce song translation in the overall context of music translation today. We will then examine which questions need to be asked when considering the translation of songs. The social, historical contexts in which a song is played determines whether it is to be translated but also how and for which medium (e.g., live theatre, film, publication) its lyrics are to be transferred.
The most common musical forms used in songs and how they relate to poetic forms will be considered as they affect how lyrics are produced and organised. The main types of translation pertaining to songs will be surveyed and connected to the different communication purposes that are suitable for them.
Various exercises will allow participants to put in practice the ideas discussed and to have an insight into this complex and rewarding form of transfer.
