Two Projects from the School of Foreign Languages at SJTU Won the 2017 ‘Major Project of the National Social Science Fund of China’

Two projects from the School of Foreign Languages at SJTU have won the 2017 ‘Major Projects of the National Social Science Fund of China’. A total of eight from SJTU have successfully secured the research grant, among which the School of Foreign Languages alone accounts for a quarter of the total awarded projects. The two projects cover both linguistics and literature, and are led by Professor Kaibao Hu in Translation and Intercultural Studies and Professor Biwu Shang in English Literature, respectively.

The project led by Professor Hu is entitled “中国特色大国外交的话语构建、翻译与传播研究” [The Construction, Translation and Transmission of Chinese Diplomatic Discourse]; and the other led by Professor Shang is entitled “当代西方叙事学前沿理论的翻译与研究” [Translation of and Research on the Frontier Theories of Contemporary Western Narratology]. This is the first time for the School of Foreign Languages to have two projects awarded in the same year. The School’s first ‘Major Project of the National Social Science Fund of China’ was won in 2016, for a research project led by Professor Qinglong Peng.

Launched by the National Planning Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences in China in 1991, the ‘National Social Science Fund of China’ aims to encourage research in Philosophy and Social Sciences in the country. There are two main categories: ‘General Project’ and ‘Major Project’; the ‘Major Project of the National Social Science Fund of China’ is now the most prestigious research grant in China.
