PHD Scholarship in The experience of the Other: the stranger, the foreigner, the different, the outsider, the unknown

Graduate School: Arts and Humanities
PhD programme: Foreign Literatures, Languages and Linguistics
Application Deadline: 16 April 2018
Start Date: 1st October 2018
Duration: 36 months

The PhD programme in Foreign Languages, Literatures and Linguistics aims to promote high-level academic education based on the integration of linguistic, literary and cultural studies in order to build critical awareness of the multicultural and multilingual reality of Europe and of the world, as well as the ability to act upon such reality.

The experience of the Other (the stranger, the foreigner, the different, the outsider, the unknown) is one of the most important topics in today’s world characterized by global business relations and international cultural exchange on the one hand but also by supranational wars, terrorism, exploitation and, consequently, global war and poverty migration on the other.

The experience of the Other has always been one of the key topics in literature, spelled out in terms of borders and boundaries; migration, integration and alienation; inclusion and exclusion; etc. Literature is the place where elaborations of past events and ideas about the future are developed without the limitations typical for the political, sociological or historical discourse. Hence, literature – although or maybe just because literature is free of practical purpose – is able to give important contributions to social challenges.

The research proposals should investigate the expression of the experience of the Other in past and contemporary literature, with respect to the above quoted global challenges.
