Multilingualism and representation of identities in audiovisual texts

Audiovisual products, surrounding us constantly nowadays, transmit supposed new stereotypes and prejudices. Through translation and new technologies audiovisual works are spread globally, leading to the configuration and consolidation of certain, multilingual and multicultural, identity rewrites. These identity rewrites may aim to wreck old stereotypes while, at the same time, they may perpetuate others and even give rise to new and different ones.
Despite the fact that audiovisual translation may be considered as a powerful social activity (Díaz-Cintas, 2012), the reproduction and representation of multilingual and multicultural identities in the context of audiovisual products is a field still to be explored (Chaume, 2013).
With a dynamic concept of the term “identity” in mind (cf. Stuart Hall, 1990), this issue seeks to investigate the reproduction and representation of (gender, race, ethnicity, nation, etc.) identities and answer for the need to approach (para)textual information accompanying audiovisual products. As audiovisual texts may assimilate and disseminate values, attitudes and identity models travelling through the global village, the purpose is to place the centre of attention in identity issues with a wider and more inclusive concept and with a special emphasis on the representation of identities in audiovisual products.
In order to do so, participants are invited to take descriptive translation studies as a basis, but deal with research from a transcultural point of view and with a markedly ideological approach – in line with the most recent perspectives of the discipline. This special number aims to bring together contributions that, from a new perspective, study translation and the representation of identities in multilingual audiovisual texts according to the following lines of research:
- The representation of multilingual and multicultural identity in various genres and formats.
- The translation of multilingual and multicultural identity in different audiovisual translation modes (dubbing, subtitling, voice-over, audio description for the Blind and the Visually-impaired, subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard-of-hearing, free commentary, adaptation, remake, etc.).
- Characters’ linguistic selection in an audiovisual text as a factor in their appropriation or negation in the original text through translation.
- The translation of clichés and stereotypes in the media.
- The conscious or unconscious selection of audiovisual translation modes (dubbing, subtitling, voice-over, audio description for the Blind and the Visually-impaired, subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard-of-hearing, free commentary, adaptation, remake, etc.) as tools for representation, distancing or concealment of identities.
- The rewriting of multilingual realities, and existing intersections between translation and multilingualism.
- The conservation of multilingual and multicultural identities in digital formats versus analogue formats.
- Changes in the approach to and the interpretation of multilingual and multicultural realities in the retranslation of audiovisual works.
- The representation and translation of identity through minority/minoritized languages, dialects and ethnolects.
- The ideology in the process of representation and translation of identities in audiovisual multilingual texts.
- The disclosure of different agendas related to certain languages, their status, social function and power, which promote linguistic representations as narratives circulating within the society.
Anyone interested in participating in this issue must submit the full text of their article in one of the journal’s official languages (English, Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian or German) to the MonTI Secretary’s office (firstname.lastname@example.org) by 30th January, 2017. The title and a 150-word abstract in English and a second language from among the ones listed (Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian or German) must also be included in the submission. In spring 2017 the journal will inform the acceptance or otherwise of each proposal. The expected date of publication of this issue is the fourth quarter 2017.
