CFP: 8th Annual Graduate Student Conference in Translation Studies

CALL FOR PAPERS
“Translation and the Border: Crossing, Conflict, and Creation”

The graduate students of the School of Translation at Glendon College, York University,
are pleased to announce the 8th Annual Graduate Student Conference in Translation
Studies to be held at the Glendon College in Toronto on March 18, 2017. The keynote
speaker will be confirmed shortly.
Thanks to technological advancements, mass migration, and the process of globalization,
the exchange of ideas and knowledge have increased within and across cultural and
linguistic boundaries. Translators and interpreters cross over borders between cultures
and deal with power imbalances as facilitators.
The border and Translation Studies are crucial today because they are both related to the
notions of contact and movement. Border is no longer an exclusively geographical notion,
and Translation Studies is not anymore grounded in a solely text-bound approach.
Consequently, the purpose of this event is to explore and exchange about ideas triggered
by the concept of border through the lenses of Translation Studies.
We are inviting papers that delve into the questions such as:

 Translation as Border Crossing: migration, translation of minority languages,
problem of space, trauma, mediation.
 Translation as Border Conflict: agency, censorship, ethics, ideology, identity, inbetweenness,
loss of mother tongue, policy, power imbalance, translation and
interpretation during times of war.
 Translation as Border Creation: immigrant literature, hybridity or hybrid languages,
life writing, literature of exile, multilingual texts, transmission, cities in translation,
self-translation.

These and other related issues will be addressed at this one day trilingual event (English,
French, Spanish), which will include a series of individual presentations (20 minutes each)
and a closing panel discussion. Interested persons are invited to submit proposals of 250-
300 words in any of the three languages by Sunday, January 15, 2017 to
transconf2017@gmail.com. Please ensure that you include the title of your submission,
your name, your affiliations, and your contact information. Selected papers presented at
the conference will be published.
